Museum Saturday Heritage of Patterns with artist Primrose Charmz (workshop for 10-18 years)

Have you ever wondered what the combination of geometrical shapes in a pattern mean or symbolizes? There is a visual language in every shape, design, colour and more so specific to each culture. For Heritage Day, digital artist and surface designer, Primrose Charmz, will give you insight into the designs created and used by the Xhosa, Zulu and Ndebele’s. In her own practice, she uses the rich heritage and designs from various cultures as she conceptualizes cultural patterns.

After you have learnt more on the meaning, use and significance of these designs and patterns, you will embark on creating your own surface pattern using Zulu designs (they only make use of triangles) as the main influence. Your design will go home with you on a Rupert Museum tote bag, together with a set of stencils. By continuing to create your own designs and patterns – the celebration and pride of South Africa’s rich heritage lives on.
