Museum Saturday African inspired Print Pattern Design with artist Joy Ezeka (workshop for adults)

Join in for this full day workshop where you will be educated about ‘changing the narrative of the African print’ as practiced by Joy Ezeka, the founder of ZURI and IMANI. You will get an introduction to surface pattern and textile design, as she guides you to create your own design, inspired by all things that is truly South African to you.

Design philosophy for ZURI and IMANI: Until lions have their own historians, tales of the hunt will always glorify the hunter (Chinua Achebe, Nigerian Proverb, n.d.). We are on a mission to change the narrative of the ‘African print’ by weaving modern stories through design visually recording Africa’s narrative inspired its elements, culture, history and landmarks. To create ‘our own’ authentic Africanity content designs but still retaining an awareness of current trends in design.

Come have fun as you experiment with designs visually inspired by abstract forms, flowers, places and words. These patterns will be created by you from various materials to select from. No previous knowledge or drawing/design experience is required, the workshop is open for all (above 18yrs) to enjoy.

With your completed design we are offering the opportunity to have it digitally printed to fabric and made into a scarf – Designed by You! Made in Africa! This will be facilitated and manufactured by ZURI and IMANI (please note that there will be a lead time of a month to complete the order). To get your design of the day transformed into a 70x70cm scarf it will cost an additional R230. Please click the checkbox on whether you would like a scarf to be made – payment to be made separately (TBC).
