Curator Walkabout: ‘The Song of Tapestry’ by Jean Lurçat

Join us for a walkabout of The Song of Tapestry with Rupert Museum curator Eliz-Marié Schoonbee at Merchants on Long. Enjoy a glass of wine as you explore Jean Lurçat’s captivating tapestries and ceramics, showcased in this special pop-up exhibition during Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2025.

Why Art Nouveau, and why Merchants on Long? Merchants on Long excels in celebrating design that is hand-crafted, ethically made and sourced on the African continent. The offering is sold at 34 Long Street, a historic building dating back 350 years. The building’s terracotta façade dated, 1896, is one of “the best examples of Art Nouveau architecture still left in Cape Town” according to historian Desiree Picton-Seymour. Interweaving the works of Lurçat with African design, provides a window into the visionary world of the artist while in conversation with contemporary designers – the exhibition shares the celebration of artistry, collaboration, aesthetics, quality and tactility. The African design you will encounter is inspired by nature and driven by sustainability, cultural roots and a sense of community.
