JH Pierneef’s Johannesburg Station Panels: New Angles (16yrs+)

Pierneef’s 32 monumental panels, originally conceived to hang high above commuters in the main concourse of the Johannesburg Railway Station, have more recently been viewed by gallery-goers at eye-level. Bearing in mind the artist’s focus on large-format design principles, these distinct viewpoints have offered very different experiences. As the panels have been re-installed at an elevated height, now seems an opportune time to reconsider Pierneef’s iconic commission. Besides a close assessment of the panels, this talk will also look carefully at the artist’s stylistic development through the 1910s and 1920s.

Dr Alastair Meredith, Strauss & Co auctioneer, Senior Art Specialist and Head of Art Department is a renowned art historian, and much sought after speaker with a particular interest in JH Pierneef.
