The Richard Townley Johnson Archive
18 May 2019 - 3 November 2019
Tracings show part of researcher Richard ‘Ginger’ Townley Johnson’s (1911-1994) archive on southern African rock art. In the mid-70s, the Rembrandt van Rijn Art Foundation granted sponsorship to ‘Ginger’ who by then was retired to continue his various travels and explorations to trace rock art sites in Southern Africa. Ginger’s reproductions of rock art consist of an artist quality and atmosphere, as his techniques of tracing and reproductions were employed to closely resemble not just the originals but also the rock face. The archive collection holds 1,631 paintings covering rock art sites across the Western and Northern Cape, Drakensberg, Orange Free State, Erongo in Namibia and Zimbabwe.
