Walkabout: ‘From the Vault’

Join us for a walkabout of the Stellenbosch Triennale’s From the Vault exhibition at the Rupert Museum with Chief Curator Khanyisile Mbongwa and artist Kemang wa Lehulere.
This walkabout will share both the curator and artist’s insights and thoughts around the body of paintings by Wa Lehulere, titled Amarhoqololo: six feet away from illegibility, in conversation with pieces from the permanent collections of the Rupert Museum, by the likes of Anton van Wouw (1862-1945), Jan Buys (1909-1985), Cecil Higgs (1898-1986) and WH Coetzer (1900-1983).
Amarhoqololo is an isiXhosa word denoting illegibility and or the unrecognisable. The works explore the inner universe, psychological or unconscious realm with the intent to delve into the child-like form of excavation to express the invisible and unseen. While this position intentionally expresses illegibility, it is also aware of the claims as contradictory while searching for meaning and sense-making in what cannot be deliberately ciphered.
