Garden Week Dye Art Floral Feels workshop with Rita Trafford
Join Rita Trafford on Saturday, 9 October at the Rupert Museum to create your very own unique and bespoke botanical scarf.
Floral Feels is about creating your own colour explosion on a 180cm x 45cm 100% silk scarf with florals and cheerful botanicals rich in pigment. We will learn about the wonderful pigments & dyes found in nature and how to successfully capture them onto silk, making a beautiful wearable piece of art.
A clear step by step demonstration will be given before creating your very own silk creation. Bundles of encapsulated leaves will steam during a break for lunch and then followed by opening our silk parcels to see what they reveal. The workshop includes all working materials, notes, and a blank silk scarf.
Each scarf is a unique adventure – a wearable piece of art dictated by nature and her season.
Fresh, dried, whole & complete, wind damaged, nibbled, broken fallen leaves, petals and other plant bits are placed on layers of fabric, bound tightly before heating to extract the botanical images permanently. It is a lengthy yet mindful process. Each season gifting new botanical treasures.
One can gather leaves in concentration from under the trees, place leaves with deliberation on fabric, but what happens during the heating and curing always surprises. Prepare for the unexpected.
All materials will be provided.
Limited seats available. Bookings are made via Visit Stellenbosch
